Wilfred William Glanville

Wilfred William Glanville was the fifth child of Captain William Fanshawe Glanville and his wife Mary Anne, youngest daughter of Vice-Admiral Bedford; they married in 1841. William spent forty years in the Royal Navy and was following a family tradition of naval service, which included his uncle Admiral Sir Arthur Fanshawe, for whom he served for three years.

Wilfred was born in 1849, and was just 21 and a Sub-Lieutenant when he was lost with HMS Captain.

It is believed that Wilfred’s older brother Owen Fanshawe Glanville (by 1870 the oldest surviving male in the family) reluctantly left the navy after the Captain disaster, to look after the family, and opened a school for boys (possibly for sons of naval officers) in Devon .
