Alfred Grover -
stoker
When
I was young, my father told me that our name was in St Pauls on a
plaque. When my father died there was a bible with the names of my
ancestors in it.
Alfred was born on the 10th July 1834 may be Fobbing (or Corringham?) Essex. His father was John Grover, and mother Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). He had a sister June or Jane, also an uncle whose name was Alfred. He married Sarah Livermore (who was born in Radwinter, Essex) at St James Church, Plumstead, Lewisham, London, on the 4th November 1860. They had 3 children: Alfred J born 1862; William L born 1867; and Henry T born 1870. (Elizabeth re-married in 1871 to Joseph Stannard. After the marriage the boys surname was changed to Stannard, but when they got married they changed back to Grover At the time of his marriage Alfred was a brewer; when on HMS Captain he was a stoker.
Peter Grover – possible great-grandson
