Warrant Officer Edmund Powell

Born in Selsey, Sussex, in 1829, he was described on the 1851 census as a whitesmith, but joined the Royal Navy as a blacksmith, which meant he was a gunner. Prior to serving on HMS Captain, he had served on HMS Asia.

He married Charlotte Groom around 1861, and they had four children: Edmund, born in Portsea in 1862; William, Thomas and Eliza, born in 1867,1868, and 1870 respectively, in East Lavant, Sussex. Eliza was baptised in 1870 in East Lavant, a note appears on the register regarding her father's death on  HMS Captain.

The three boys were educated at the Royal Hospital School, Greenwich, and the two elder sons subsequently joined the Royal Navy.
