Photo or Memorial Card - this  has been provided by Bernard Butcher.

This card provides more questions than answers - it was found in the photograph album originally belonging to Bernard's great-grandfather's sister (Elizabeth Downes Butcher, 1831-1904), and was the only photo in the album not a picture of a person. On the rear is written "In Memoriam: Sep 7th 1870".

Research showed that one of those lost on the Captain was a Thomas Butcher, a Leading Seaman, born 1828, and it would be reasonable to assume that Elizabeth had this picture as Thomas was a member of her family. However, Elizabeth had five well documented siblings, so Thomas (if, indeed, is a member of her Butcher family) is either a missing sibling or a more distant relation, e.g. a cousin.

Investigations continue!
