Painted ostrich egg

This egg (together with another depicting another ship) was bought in the late 1960s "from a rather junky antique shop" in Conway, North Wales. The egg is about 12 cm long and 10 cm wide, and bears the mis-spelt inscription "Wreck of H.M.S. Captian Bay of Biscay 1870".

Both eggs are signed "DOWNEY". Who Downey is is not known and why he or she should choose to produce a picture of this tragic event in this way is anybody's guess.
