Souvenir fashioned from piece of survivors' boat

This interesting item was originally handed down in the family of a mariner who was apparently on HMS Monarch and part of the crew sent to pick up the survivors from the Spanish mainland.

The last family owner was the daughter of the mariner, (although time-scales suggest perhaps more likely granddaughter). Her maiden name is unknown, her married name was Smith, and possibly had no children - all of which has made it impossible, for the moment, to track down the original mariner's name.

A small compass was also handed down, which may be from the lifeboat.

The text reads -

Piece of the boat in which the survivors of HMS "Captain" were rescued, 7th Sept: 1870, in the Bay of Biscay - self in opposite ship, viz. HMS "Monarch".

18 only saved
