Magic Lantern slide - this curiosity has been provided by Gwen Sebus of The Netherlands, who has an interest in these old (Victorian) precursors of modern photograph slides.

Despite the writing on the wooden surround (HM Turret Ship "Captain", Capsized 1870, 500 lives lost), difficult to know whether it was produced to celebrate the building of this remarkable ship, or in memory of its demise. 

The picture has been copied from a picture published in The Graphic (a London based magazine) in March 1870.
