Memorial
card
One descendant reports having seen a memorial card as a child, whilst another has, preserved in an old family bible, the original of the memorial card shown below.
The significance of this card to her family is to be investigated, but in the meantime thanks to Virginia Steele of Perth, Ontario, Canada, for making the card available for the website.

In Memory of
the
506 GALLANT BRITISH SAILORS
Who perished in H.M.S.”CAPTAIN”
Which perished off Cape Finisterre, on the morning of September 7th,
1870
“There is on the lone, lone sea
A spot unmarked, but holy:
For there the gallant and the free
In their ocean bed lie lowly.
“Down, down beneath the deep,
That oft to triumph bore them,
They sleep a calm and peaceful sleep,
The salt waves dashing o’er them.
“And though no stone may tell
Their name, their worth, their glory,
They rest in hearts that loved them well,
They grace Britannia’s story. |
