Models of HMS Captain

Three models are known about; the one originally photographed in Arthur Hawkey’s book, together with a half-model, are currently in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, albeit in the storage buildings some miles away. Special arrangements need to be made to view them. The models were made by Lairds at the time the ship was built, the half-model being the work of Laird's apprentices.

In addition, Overbeck Museum, near Salcombe in Devon has a sectional model

The Salcombe model is in a glass case as part of the Maritime Room at The National Trust’s Overbecks Museum and Garden, Sharpitor, Salcombe, Devon (www.nationaltrust.org.uk)

Thanks to the present Property Manager, Roy Chandler, for the photograph. Unfortunately he can find no information as to its origin or how it came to be at Salcombe.
