Other books -

"The Black Battlefleet" by Admiral Ballard.

Admiral G A Ballard wrote a number of articles for The Mariner's Mirror, including one about the Captain. These were edited and republished as The Black Battlefleet (Nautical Publishing Co - 1980).

"Hurrah for the Life of a Sailor" by John Winton

This is a `jolly' book containing material about Captain in an account of lower deck life in the Victorian Navy. There is a particularly good chapter on the first naval VCs.

(Thanks to David Evans for this information)

"Warrior to Dreadnought - Warship Development 1860 - 1905" by D K Brown (Chatham Publishing, 1997).

David K Brown received a 1st Class Certificate in Warship Design in 1953, and retired in 1988 as Deputy Chief Naval Architect of the Royal Core of Naval Constructors. At the time of publishing he was Vice-President of both the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and of the World Ship Society. He has written many books on naval construction, as well as many other articles and papers.

This is a fascinating book, and one wonders why it is now selling for under £10. As well as putting Captain into context, it is particularly interesting for its direct comparison between Coles' Captain and Reed's Monarch. Whilst this comparison is not quoted in this website, some parts of the book (duly credited) have been added.

"Náufragos de Antaño" by Juan Campos (translation of sub-title "The Great Shipwrecks on the Coast of Death").

This book, written in Spanish, is about 19th century shipwrecks on the Galician coast, mostly British. The fifth chapter devotes more than 50 pages to the Captain.

The author believes that the wreck is closer to the coast than Hawkey has said, being some 16 to 17 miles south west of Cape Finisterre, and around the 300 metre mark, and had been originally marked by a buoy by the Royal Navy.

The author has also pointed out that the Captain wreck is on the same latitude as the wreck of the German liner Nord-Deutsche Lloyd, lost in 1896, albeit that ship was just a few miles off the coast. The designer was again     E.J. Reed.

Some of Juan Campos's information has been included in this website, and duly credited.

The book's author can be contacted on juanserpent@yahoo.es and the publishers of the book (in 2002) were Editorial Juventud, Provença, 101-08029, Barcelona.
