“Too Deep the Sea” by Bernard Ash

The author of this site has been sent a press cutting from the Portsmouth Evening News, dated 8th November 1958.

In it, under the article heading “In Our Good Books”, is a review of this book, as follows -

“Book Reveals the Amazing Story of an Unhappy Ship

On the morning of September 7, 1870, H.M.S. Captain capsized, off Finisterre, and there were only 17 survivors.

Thus was written the penultimate passage in the brief but stormy (sic) history of a ship which should never have sailed upon the high seas.

The last chapter is told in the findings of the court martial on Captain’s survivors...”A grave departure from her original design had been committed whereby her draught of water was increased by about two feet, and her freeboard was diminished to a corresponding extent... Her stability proved to be dangerously small combined with an area of sail under the circumstances excessive.”

The amazing story of this unhappy ship is told, cleverly woven into the lives of two youngsters, in “Too Deep the Sea” by Bernard Ash. It is published by Staples Press at 15s.”
